How many years of modern world civilization? The exact answer to this question is probably unknown to anyone.
Nevertheless, at some point of history, Russia became one of the European powers.
How was for Russia in the European family?
In general, not so badly.
We will not take into account the results of the Northern war, the seven-Year war, the partition of the Rzeczpospolita [Commonwealth], the creation of Novorossiya and the accession of Crimea. All these events, though successful, were accompanied by armed confrontation and high costs.
Another matter - the period between 18 and 19 centuries. That is "registration" of ownership of Russia to Alaska. Or 50-60 years of the 19th century - "registration" of border along Amur, that is "registration" of belonging to Russia of considerable territories of Siberia (and the Far East).
If Russia did not hurry with reforms, if the destruction of advanced developed democratic institutions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (and the Rzeczpospolita [Commonwealth]) was not accompanied by adequate reform of the state structure of the Russian Empire, it is not the fault of Europe and the "Western" civilization. But Russia in the European family continued to exist safely. The Great Siberian railway track was created. And a new surge of self confidence was appeard.
Then a lot of things happened. You can tag such an event as the Peace Treaty of Brest Litovsk - with large territorial losses.
An interesting idea began to spread during this period. Many centuries of European history are a kind of historical rubbish. But there are people who have read certain "smart" books. And these people, it turns out, are world teachers and mentors.
These mentors poked into Germany, but nothing was succeeded. If so, they directed their looks to Asia. Asia wakes up!
But, however, in 1929, the USSR's diplomatic relations with the China of Chiang Kai-shek were severed, the USSR joined the League of Nations, restored relations with the great Western powers and focused on its own development.
The concentration on the own development has produced results. Now it is not just reading "smart" books gave a confidence. Now there were things and more serious.

However, in own country, "teachers" could not arrange life so that people did not flee to the West, so that Western life did not seem more attractive.
Anyway, a forgetfulness in relation to the centuries-old European history, a manifestation of self-confidence ended not in the most favorable way. Again you can rememberthe Rzeczpospolita [the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth] (a Baltic coast) and the Novorossiya, and much more.
But a forgetfulness, self-confidence and uneasy behavior have also a reverse side. The West, the Europe (for Russia was not bad to be as a part of them), they how had to react to all this "activity" of some people, who read "clever" books, on a rendering a different "help" to other people, who read thick "clever" books?
If personally for you a someone prevent to live a normal life, and those interfere, who have enjoyed your support, your assistance, then it will cause negative emotions in you.
Without being able to make own life attractive, to teach the whole world the "right life"?!
Logically speaking, a respectful attitude to the centuries-old European history, rejection of arrogance, evasion from assuming the roles of world teachers and mentors will be adequate to reality.
Understanding of the correct device of a world civilization is not result of life in the country with the huge territory and enormous stocks of natural resources.
Europe, she is, in general, a humane. Perhaps, negative emotions will recede far away. And Russia in the European family will continue to exist safely.
